A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s World Sight Day Challenge. It has been our best to date in both practice participation and funds raised. In 2014, all Australia’s states and territories were represented as 376 practices and 23 companies signed up to take the challenge.
Some of the exciting stories to come out of this years Challenge:
Eyecare Plus Toowoomba got creative and created their own treasure map, to the delight of their young patients who guessed where the treasure was located.
Sure Optical held their third Annual Highballs for Eyeballs event at cocktail bar, Reviver. There were plenty of prizes with a lucky door prize, several silent auctions, balloon pop lucky dips and a rather competitive game of toss the coin.
Westfund Optical stores across Australia held a Pirate Patch day and challenged staff to wear a patch to experience a little of what vision loss would be like.
Eyecare Plus Moss Vale held a morning tea and invited staff, friends and patients to contribute their home-baked delights.
ProVision sponsored a volunteer visit to the Sumba Eye Program as part of their annual conference. They also helped us to welcome a number of new regular monthly donors as part of our Circle of Sight program.
Eyecare Plus registered 30 new practices to participate in our Seeing Eye to Eye program, whereby a donation of $2 will be made for every frame sold.
Essilor head office staff took the Challenge by donating their time to the “Eye Didn’t Know That” school screening team in Sydney - an initiative of Transitions Optical with support from Optometry Giving Sight.
Essilor Laboratories also joined the challenge with fancy dress and lolly competitions, bake sales, BBQ lunches and the sale of lots of wristbands.
Deakin University students held a carnival day with a BBQ and cake stall, a giant blow up twister board, sumo wrestling in hilarious oversized suits and a mechanical bull.
Queensland University of Technology students took advantage of the friendly rivalry between optometry years with a Bake-Off with each of the five years competing against each other to raise the most money. They also raised funds through a raffle held at the EyeBall and Dodgeball competition.
“As I watch the funds come in I feel a real sense of joy because I know where that money is going. I know how it will transform the life of the individual it helps and the impact it also has on their family,” said Mr Ron Baroni, Optometry Giving Sight’s Country Manager. “I think seeing the progress we are making has really inspired people this year. We all have a passion for giving the gift of vision, we see the difference it makes every day, and now we’re seeing those changes happening globally!”
Our sincere thanks to everyone who has sent us their donations already. Our goal is to finalise the campaign over the coming weeks so that we can formally announce that we have reached our campaign target of $150,000 for this year.
