World Sight Day Challenge 2018
Celebrating its 12th year, and coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight, the World Sight Day Challenge invited eye care professionals, their staff, patients, industry partners, students of Optometry and other supporters to raise funds throughout September to November. Our united effort will help the 1.2 billion people around the world who are needlessly vision impaired simply because they don't have access to an eye examination and appropriate glasses. The Wall of Fame highlights many of our wonderful participating supporters and what got up to in celebrating the Challenge in 2018. We salute you!
"Following a remarkable employee fundraising campaign that eclipsed all previous efforts, CooperVision has donated $262,000 to Optometry Giving Sight in support of the 2018 World Sight Day Challenge. These funds can provide approximately 52,000 eye exams for people around the world who are in need. Thank you to all of the employees whose passion and generosity helped make this possible." Great support also came from offices in South Africa, Puerto Rico, Hungary, Poland, Japan, Singapore, Costa Rica, Russia, UK, Korea, Turkey, Brazil and others!
Bludata donated 3600 Euros with a further 260 Euros from the employees. Bludata provides the software of many optical centres in Italy. They have been sponsors for many years. Every year they renew their commitment and increase their donations. Their enthusiastic employees also donate directly!

"October 11, 2018 was World Sight Day with Optometry Giving Sight. We celebrated all month long by wearing World Sight Day shirts, spreading knowledge, and collecting donations. With the generous support of our patients and community, we raised over $600; which will be matched by the practice! Thanks to all who acknowledged our charity of choice and celebrated World Sight Day with us!"
J & J
J & J Italy donated 10.000 Euros. Every two years they organize a visual screening for the employees. The cost of the screening is around 30 Euros for each participant. The cost is deducted from the payroll and donated to Optometry Giving Sight. At the end of the screening J & J doubles the donation. Here, the optometrists and ophthalmologists who perform the screening also donate their salary to the Challenge!

Ottica Puntovista donated 630 Euros (more than 1000 during the year). They donate the cost of eye exams (usually in Italy the exams are free but in some specialized practices like this they incur a fee), they also sell the Challenge wristbands and invite their customers to donate.
Dr Scott Mundle - Henderson Vision Centre
Dr. Scott Mundle of Winnipeg, Manitoba and the staff at Henderson Vision Centre are loyal World Sight Day Challenge participants. We asked Dr. Mundle a few questions about why he participates. What is your favourite part of the World Sight Day Challenge? “My favourite part was how keen my staff were both in the build-up during the month prior to World Sight Day and how interested they were in engaging our patients with this wonderful, worthwhile cause. Every year they come up with novel and innovative ways to engage our patients.” Why do you take the Challenge every year? “Knowing that the small part we play in fundraising for such an important global enterprise is rewarding in itself. It reminds us how privileged we are in the developed world and how we can have an impact in the developing world with education and the provision of vision care worldwide.” “We should be reminded of those who built our profession to where it is today in Canada. Participating in Optometry Giving Sight and the World Sight Day Challenge is but a small ask of us being so privileged. It may also lead some of us to volunteer on the projects that we help finance…and experience the immense gratification of seeing our donations in action.”
University of Montreal
"Once again, the University of Montreal Optometry Students wanted to participate in the World Sight Day Challenge to raise the highest amount of funds for those in need. To do so, we held a silent auction for items donated by optical companies and local businesses. It was a real success! We also sold t-shirts and folded bags with Optometry Giving Sight logo on it and we did a 5@10 social event for Montreal optometry students. All these fundraising events combined allowed us to raise over $7000 for Optometry Giving Sight! We are so happy and very proud of our achievement. Hoping this donation will make a big difference in many lives!" Anabel Cormier, Marie-Maxime Bellemare, Laurence Landry and Roxanne Arsenault École d'optométrie, Université de Montréal
