A Global Event
Celebrating its 9th year, and coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight, the World Sight Day Challenge invites eye care professionals, their staff, patients, industry partners and students of Optometry to raise funds throughout September and October to help the 600 million people around the world who are needlessly vision impaired. Here are some of the great effort our wonderful supporters got up to in 2015. Thank you!
Singapore eye screenings
Optometry Giving Sight coordinated free eye screenings for underprivileged senior citizens, adults and children in Singapore to mark World Sight Day.Read the story here
Alcon, Forth Worth
US, Fort Worth, TX
Congrats all and thank you! Rhonda from Alcon writes: "In Fort Worth, associates were asked to ride a total of 2020 minutes to trigger a $10,000 donation from the Alcon Foundation to OGS. Competition to out-ride colleagues helped us beat the Cycle for Sight 20/20 Challenge by a huge margin. The 250 associates who participated in the challenge rode a total of 2,497 minutes."
Studio Ottico Zappon
The Studio Ottico Zappon italian staff held an event in the practice of a small town in the north part of Italy (Noventa Vicentina). Fundriasing and involving the local bakery and bar they were able to collect more than €700 during World Sight Day. An amazing result and good beginning to demonstrate what can be done and more! Thanks to Fabio and all the staff.

Lee (Co-Director of Eyeconik Optometrists) writes, "we ran a guess the lollies in the jar competition during the month of October. We're a small practice run by my husband Andrew (the Optom) and myself. We recently employed two dispensing staff who job share. So next year we hope to make a bigger contribution as we build up the practice. Congratulations on a wonderful project and we wish you many more years of success."
University of New South Wales
The UNSW optometry students fundraised by holding BBQs, bake sales, taking part in the annual City2Surf run!Watch the BBQ action!
The University of Melbourne Optometry Students Society
The UMOSS students have long been supporters of Optometry Giving Sight to raise awareness for blindness and vision impairment on World Sight Day. This year they fundraised by holding bake sales, a comedy night, chocolate fundraisers and a “guess the prescription” competition.
Queensland University of Technology
The QUT optometry students fundraised by holding numerous bake sales, hosting a trivia night, selling raffle tickets at social events (dodgeball competition and the annual Eye Ball) and selling “Optometry 2015” hoodies with all of the profit going straight to Optometry Giving Sight.
Sure Eye Care
Sure Eye Care held their annual Highballs for Eyeballs and raised a record $5,939. The silent and live auctions, coin tossing and popping of the balloons were great favourites of the night.Click here to watch our auction video at Highballs for Eyeballs night!
Valley Vision Optometry

Our thanks to Valley Vision Optometry in Port Alberni BC for their fantastic World Sight Day Challenge support! In addition to donating a day of eye exam fees, making monthly donations throughout the year, selling chocolates and inviting patients to donate, Valley Vision Optometry also held a few additional creative events. They wore T-shirts to promote the World Sight Day Challenge and also held a Clearance Frame Sale throughout October where they donated $25 to Optometry Giving Sight for each one sold. Over $6000 was raised in total!
Complete Eyecare Optometry
Canada, Abbotsford, BC
Complete Eyecare Optometry in Abbotsford BC participated in the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge by making a donation as well as holding several fundraising events in October, including a bake sale. A couple of their staff members are exceptional bakers and the impressive mouth-watering goodies were a great hit! Their wonderful contribution totalled $2410, which will help many people in need to see! Thank you Complete Eyecare Optometry!
Cambridge Eye Care
Canada, Cambridge ON
Cambridge Eye Care in Cambridge ON held their annual pub-night event to raise funds for the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge and the event was a huge success once again! Music for the night was compliments of the band ‘Fossil Fuel’! But they didn't stop there, they also held a bake sale and several other fundraising events in their office throughout October, and all of the doctors generously made donations. Altogether over $3000 was raised!
Canada, Swift Current SK
Optical Image in Swift Current SK (Canada) did an amazing job again in 2015 for the World Sight Day Challenge, with over $6600 raised!! They donated $5 for every frame sold in October, held a BBQ outdoor lunch fundraiser where ‘The Smoke Shack’ generously donated all of the profits, held weekly bake sales with staff members bringing in home baked treats, hosted a Halloween Party (where many fabulous costumes were worn), held several silent auctions for frames and swim goggles, invited patients to donate throughout October, donated a day of eye exam fees and made a donation. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Godenir, Dr. Block and team for your fantastic efforts in giving sight to people in need!
Canada, Victoria BC

Clinique En Vue de Baie-Comeau
Dre Bénédicte Morisse et l’équipe de la Clinique En Vue de Baie-Comeau ont fait don d'une journée d'honoraires d'examens de la vue à l'occasion de la journée mondiale de la vue le 8 octobre. Ils ont également invité leurs patients à faire de même. Dre Morisse fait aussi un don mensuel généreux dans le courant de l’année. En tout, le don a totalisé plus de 1 300,00 $! Dr. Bénédicte Morisse and the team at Clinique En Vue de Baie-Comeau donated a day of eye exam fees on World Sight Day, October 8th, and invited their patients to donate as well. Dr. Morisse also generously makes a monthly donation throughout the year. Altogether they contributed over $1300.00!
Opticianry Society at Seneca College
Canada, Toronto, ON
The Opticianry Society at Seneca College in Toronto ON, Canada held a fundraising event on campus on World Sight Day! Led by the society's three leaders, Jianjun Wang(Eric), Michael Carter and Quyen Nguyen, the group had a booth and distributed Optometry Giving Sight newsletters to students and faculty at the college to raise awareness of the cause and invite donations.
Practice Building for independent Opticians
Andy Clark of Practice Building for independent Opticians came up with an innovative idea. Donating his time free, he is offering a month’s worth of one-to-one coaching with a value of £995 for a minimum donation of £250. Practices receive a scheduled weekly coaching call, access to the practice building toolbox, as well as telephone and e-mail support.
Gold UK sponsor matched fundraising cyclists for the first £10,000.00. Staff complete Three Peaks challenge raised £1,000. A raffle at Thornbury headquarters for World Sight Day raised £770.00.Read the story here
Chapman Opticians in Regent’s Arcade, Cheltenham, set up static bikes in the shopping arcade where they are based. In total they raised £1012.78 and got a Platinum Award from us. In the afternoon the local Member of Parliament, Alex Chalk joined them on one of the exercise bikes fro twenty minutes. They had three bikes and cycled during the day 489 miles.
As well as offering sponsorship at the silver level in Europe, Maui Jim offices across the European region supported us with a variety of events. Maui Jim UK office raised close to £500. Maui Jim France organised a garage sale in October, followed by a raffle in December collecting €700. Maui Jim Germany raised around £1500. In Norway Maui Jim worked with one of their customers Ål Optikk raising NOK 4950 or GBP £400. "This optical store arranged a lottery over a period of time in their store. Every consumer who puts minimum NOK 50 to the collection can for Optometry Giving Sight, gets a number in the lottery where the prize is one pair of Maui Jim plano sunglasses, and it is up to the consumer to select which style he/she wishes. Maui Jim Nordic then replaced this product free of charge to customer.”
Williams and Associates Eyecare and Eyedentity Eyewear

For their first World Sight Day Challenge, Dr. Shelley Williams and staff put on a trunk show with a portion of the proceeds, as well as raffle ticket sales, benefiting the Challenge. They continued donating after the Challenge and signed up to do the I Care & Share program, donating a portion of all eyeglass sales every month.
Pickering Optometric Clinic

Our sincere thanks to Pickering Optometric Clinic / Oshawa Optometric Centre in Picking ON who participated in the World Sight Day Challenge for the first time in 2015! Practice coach Colleen Harnack described their involvement, "Our office sold gift baskets made up from staff money donations, and Robyn, the coach from Oshawa Optometric, made a wreath and sold tickets. We raised over $1100.00 dollars our first year joining, and we are very proud of our teams!"
University of Houston College of Optometry

This year's 2nd place winner for the North American World Sight Day Student Challenge travel award! Maria Dupré lead the Challenge at UHCO. "Our college is always extremely excited to contribute to Optometry Giving Sight with our talent show! World Sight Day always brings UHCO together as a team for sight, and we're really grateful for the VOSH/International award!"
Queensway Optometric Centre

Our sincere thanks to Queensway Optometric Centre in Mississauga ON for raising $8420.50 for the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge! Office Manager Terri Fracassa describes their involvement: “In 2010 Dr. Yeung proposed the idea of supporting Optometry Giving Sight and our team at Queensway Optometric Centre embraced the idea every year since. We look forward to every year challenging ourselves to do our best and inspire other office to come on board. During the month of October we kicked things into high gear. Team members rotated wearing their Optometry Giving Sight t-shirts to help promote the charity. We created a Wall of Glasses; paper eyeglasses that could be purchased for a $2.00 donation. This year we had reached out to some of our frame reps to help us with our fundraising efforts by donating a sunglass that we could put up for auction. Our World Sight Day Challenge was Wednesday November 4, 2015. On that day our doctors donated all full eye exam fees to Optometry Giving Sight. Baked goods donated by our staff, along with coffee and refreshments were available for a donation. We had balloons for all the children. All of us at Queensway Optometric Centre want to thank everyone for support and helping us reach our goals for such a wonderful charity. We at Queensway Optometric Centre love making a difference!"
InSight Eye Care

Drs. Ames and Anderson at InSight Eye Care have been supporters of the World Sight Day Challenge since before 2010. Every year they pick Optometry Giving Sight as their fourth quarter charity and donate a portion of eyeglass sales for the quarter. We love the rainbow of colors!
Edinburgh Optometry Clinic

A big thanks to Dr. Kate MacNeill and her team at Edinburgh Optometry Clinic in Guelph ON who kicked things into high gear in 2015 for the World Sight Day Challenge, raising over $4500.00! To raise such a wonderful amount their office did many things, including having donation boxes at all their dispensing tables; holding three bake sales; holding their annual car wash which has become a tradition that patients and non-patients look forward to and are very supportive of; holding raffles for many items including for hand-crafted gift cards donated by a local artist, tickets to the ‘One of a Kind Christmas Show' and 4 sets of tickets to the local junior hockey team donated by Dr. MacNeill and her husband; Dr. MacNeill asked friends and family to donate to Optometry Giving Sight rather than give her birthday or Christmas gifts; and the practice and doctors made a donation for the Challenge as well! Dr. MacNeill also volunteered her time in 2015 to mentor newly graduated optometrists in Malawi. Dr. MacNeill commented: “We participate in the World Sight Day Challenge as we see this as a way to educate our patients regarding the global inequality in the access to eye care, as well as a way that they can help in providing a solution. My personal involvement in initiatives that are funded by Optometry Giving Sight has demonstrated to our patients the impact that is made by their donations.”
Island Eyecare Ltd

Our thanks to Island Eyecare Ltd in Sydney Nova Scotia who participated in the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge by holding fundraising events throughout October. Their efforts included a 'Guess the Number of Candies' jar, a raffle for an afghan blanket which was handmade by one of their staff, and inviting patient to donate in return for glasses adjustments!
Lake Country Optometry
Dr. Karla Reimer and the team at Lake Country Optometry participated in the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge by donating a day of eye exam fees and by inviting patients to donate. Their contribution totaled $1559! Our thanks to everyone there for your generosity and support in giving sight to those in need!
Mountain View Optometry
Canada, Cochrane, AB
Mountain View Optometry in Cochrane AB participated in a phenomenal way again in 2015 for the World Sight Day Challenge, raising over $5400! Their activities included a bake sale, a Facebook ‘bidding war’ silent auction on a few items generously donated by suppliers including lenses from ZEISS Group and Nikon Lenswear and a pair of Maui Jim prescription sunglasses, and also 50/50 draw! They promoted their fundraising extensively on social media and their e-newsletter, and the local newspaper ran a story to help support the cause as well! Staff member Kaila commented: “The World Sight Day Challenge is one of my favorite times of the year here at the office. The Events are so much fun and it gets everyone to work together to make a difference in many people’s lives around the world. We are so happy to be a part of this fantastic organization and we are looking forward to next year!" A big thanks as well to Victoria for all of her help in raising funds!
Canada office - Optometry Giving Sight
The team at the Canadian Optometry Giving Sight office took the Challenge themselves, holding fundraising events and inviting family and friends to donate. Over $2300.00 was raised in total! They held a successful garage sale, bake sale and several draws. Their goal for next year year is to raise $3000!

OptoInfo created a series of ingenious games to get people in the fundraising mood. Games with unlikely names included: Globey Glasses, Eyeball Plates and Eyeball Pong! OptoInfo is based in Scotland and deliver social media training.Visit OptoInfo
Isthmus Eye Care

Drs. Connors, Connors, Jens, and Maursetter have been ardent supporters of Optometry Giving Sight and the World Sight Day Challenge since inception. For the 2015 Challenge, the doctor and staff sold donated pastries and baked goods from a local bakery and all proceeds benefited the Challenge. They also accepted patient donations and matched all money collected.

Dr. Roddy and staff have such a passion for the World Sight Day Challenge and they let their patients know! They raised over $1,500 in patient donations alone. With Dr. Roddy's patient match, they raised over $3,000 for the Challenge. Thanks to Dr. Roddy, Jaimie and everyone at Advanced Eye Care.

A sweet treat for a donation!For the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge, Dr. Orr & Dr. Brodie's office in Orangeville ON decided to have their main celebration day close to Halloween so they could dress up. They held a halloween themed bake sale, had a silent auction and a 'guess how many are in the jar' game with candy eyeballs. Thanks to everyone there for your great support!

Optics Cycling for Sight
In 2015, 43 individuals/ groups cycled all over the UK in an effort to raise funds for Optometry Giving Sight UK and Vision Aid Overseas. They collectively managed to raise £13,250 and Essilor UK match funded the first £10,000 raised. The funds raised from last years’ event are being used to build capacity in Ghana, Ethiopia and Zambia by developing the skills of the Optometry Profession.
Linden Optometry, a P.C

The doctors and staff at Linden Optometry have participated in the Challenge with gusto yet again in 2015, raising over $5,000! Last year they also received the top World Sight Day Challenge donor award and were able to send one doctor for a "sight" visit to see how their donated dollars were being used. A big thanks to everyone at Linden Optometry for their generous support and passion for the cause.

Under the leadership of student Jenna Phongsy, Inter American had another fantastic Student Challenge! The students bought tshirts, ate yummy treats at the ice cream social and spiked some balls during a volleyball tournament. Thanks to the wonderful students of Inter American!
Canada, Calgary, AB
FYidoctors were involved in a big way again this year! All of their offices participated in the World Sight Day Challenge, and the FYidoctors Home Office team (pictured) held many fundraising events. Members of Home Office team competed in the Canmore Half Marathon – 5k Run in September to inspire donations. The legal, acquisitions and reception department teams hosted a wine tasting and donated $20 from every ticket purchased. The home office marketing team hosted a “Spin for Sight” spin class and movie night. The Head Office also ran their annual “$1 for Every Like” campaign on Facebook, giving $1 to Optometry Giving Sight for every new 'like' made! Over $100,000 was raised in total! University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo Optometry Students participated again this year for the World Sight Day Student Challenge, and raised $6321.73 which was the most of any optometry school in North America! As a result they won a $1000 travel stipend towards a VOSH volunteer trip. Their fundraising included a ‘Dining in the Dark’ event where participants were blindfolded during a meal to simulate what it would be like to be blind, and a silent auction for many items that were generously donated by the optometric community, local businesses and individuals. TLC Laser Centre in Waterloo was the largest sponsor of the event, donating a laser eye surgery gift certificate for the silent auction. Our sincere thanks to the student organizers who made it all happen: Courtney Fan (main organizer), Marcia LaFrance and Vinoja Kamaleswaran!
FYidoctors in Ladysmith BC held an ingenious 'Balloon Pop' fundraiser where they filled up balloons with air and included a slip of paper on which a prize written - items like an FYi pen, mugs, lens cleaner and up to $25.00 off product purchase. For a minimum $5 donation, patients could pop a balloon and see which prize they won. Everyone that contributed to the challenge was given a slip to put their name on and was put in for the grand prize given at the end. Our thanks to FYidoctors Ladysmith for their wonderful creative support!
FYidoctors Varsity in Calgary participated in the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge with very creative fundraising activities in their office. All patients who made a donation could vote for which doctors' football team they preferred (Dr. Sean Wilson is a Calgary Stampeders fan and Dr. Russ Schultz is a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan). The doctor with the most votes for their team got to make the other doctor wear their rival football jersey for a day. Patients had a fun time voting, especially knowing that their donations would help give the gift of vision to people in need. The office even extended the voting to Facebook to engage more people. After the voting was over, Dr. Schultz ended up having to wear a Stampeder jersey in the clinic for a day!
Palos Verdes Family Vision Optometry

The Drs. Hawley (James, Terry and Kathleen) of Palos Verdes Family Vision Optometry have been long-standing supporters of the World Sight Day Challenge. For 2015 they collected staff and patients donations and the doctors made a practice donation as well. Thanks to the doctors and staff of Palos Verdes Family Vision Optometry for the support throughout the years.
Eye on Evanston

Our thanks to Eye On Evanston in Calgary AB! Staff member Akirta Sran headed up the efforts, which included a bake sale with eyeball themed cupcakes, a ‘Guess the candies in the jar’ contest where the person with the closest guess won the whole jar, and they also invited patients to make a donation! Every person who donated got to write their name on a card to place on the wall to celebrate their generosity!
Dolman Eyecare Centre

Our thanks to Dolman Eyecare Centre in New Hamburg ON who raised $2525 for the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge! To raise such a wonderful amount, in addition to the practice making a generous donation, they organized a 'Movie Night Out' basket draw and a homemade 'Christmas Swag' draw to help encourage patients to participate! They had paper 'glasses' for everyone who donated to write their name on to post on the wall for recognition, and they kept track of donations using a 'thermometer poster' to help show everyone how much was raised to date and to encourage them to contribute to their goal. Kudos to everyone there for your support and efforts!
