The Equal Health India 2010 placement consisted of 4 optical teams. Each team consisted of one optometrist, one optical dispenser and one interpreter. The four teams worked out of three different rural locations in India – Urapakkam in Tamil Nadu, Trichy in Tamil Nadu and Katwa in West Bengal. 4077 people presented with presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, amblyopia, aphakia and cataracts and received an eye examination. 3557 of the patients received spectacles.
Part of the role of each Equal Health optical team is to provide training to local people as accessed by Equal Health’s partners in India. In association with local businesses, Equal Health is currently preparing a system that is aimed at providing the manufacture and distribution of spectacles that will be affordable to people in the region of the work. These people are currently unable to afford spectacles. It is planned that the program will eventually be self sustainable.
