SUCCESS STORY:
Generosity in Action

Rena and Sue from Dr John Schachet's Practice

Dr. John Schachet’s practice in Colorado has launched Practice Giving at full steam ahead. OGS Champions Rena and Sue have a passion for the program and enjoy asking patients to give. While Rena recently commented, “Oh you know, it’s a lot of information when the patient checks in – this paperwork, insurance, this and that new test available – but we always finish with the chance for the patient to donate to OGS and they appreciate it!”

Dr. Schachet participates in the Matching Program meaning he and his associates are matching patient donations dollar for dollar. In the first month of the program they raised over $210. Most Optometrists see roughly 175 to 200 patients per month. This means that at least half of Dr. Schachet’s patients donated.

Rena also noted that one patient was so moved she donated $50 on the spot! “She donated $1 and then while she was waiting she read the information OGS provides. She was so taken up with the mission that she came back up to the desk, pulled out her checkbook, wrote a $50 check, commenting, “I believe it this effort!” Now there’s an example of generosity in action.

Thanks to Dr. Schachet, his associates, and especially the staff for their efforts to give sight each and every day.

HOW DO I ASK FOR DONATIONS?

The most effective approach we’ve found is to be as simple and direct as possible with the patient.

Find the three sentences that work best in your practice to convey this message:

(1) This is the “Charity of Choice’ of our practice.
(2) The doctors will match your donation (this shows confidence in the program).
(3) Here is some information for you to look over (give patient tear off sheet).

Variation…

(1) Dr. Jones supports Optometry Giving Sight as his “Charity of Choice’.
(2) He’ll match your donation because he believes in the program.
(3) Here’s some information for you to read.

That’s it. Three simple sentences to convey the message. The front office staff will find those three sentences that are most comfortable for them. One office manager says it simply “rolls off her tongue” now.

The in-office materials make it easy to save your staff words to ‘make the ask’. By giving the patient the tear-off sheet, the patient can simply check the box if they’d like to donate.

We find that 70-80% gladly donate but the key is in THE ASK. If no one asks – the patient doesn’t realize they have the chance to give.

We’re happy to train your staff to make the process easy for them to implement in the practice. Just ask!

YOU’LL HEAR FROM US IN THE NEW YEAR

We still have not connected with some of you due to the busy schedules you keep in the practice. That’s good in one way. It means that your practice is thriving! At the same time, OGS would like to get your practice started in Practice Giving in the new year as a worthwhile project for your practice in 2007.

One of our OGS staff will contact you in early 2007 to work with your practice to make the process as simple as possible to get started. The feedback we receive is that the key to implementing the Practice Giving Program is JUST DO IT!

END OF YEAR OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE SIGHT
