Volunteer for projects
Optometry Giving Sight works with an alliance of agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that coordinate vision care projects around the world. These programs aim to establish sustainable infrastructure via routine eye examinations, distribution of glasses, eye clinics, training programs and clinical equipment in those countries most in need.
If you give a person a fish they eat for a day; if you teach them how to fish they can eat for a lifetime.
Our philosophy is to support sustainable programs that provide employment for local people and ensure that services will be affordable and accessible over the long term.
As a result, Optometry Giving Sight does not fund mission trips per se. However limited opportunities for donors to participate in “Volunteer Site Visits” are available. These are conducted in conjunction with the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), a Non Government Development Organisation (NGDO) which is the beneficiary of funds provided by Optometry Giving Sight.
In 2008, ICEE invited Optometry Giving Sight to invite its supporters to provide volunteer services at the following programs:
11 -13 February: Eastern Uganda – (2 Optometrists). Applications now closed.
19-24 May: Durban South Africa (4 Optometrists). Applications now closed.
06–10 October: Durban South Africa (4 Optometrists). Applications still open.
