Project funding
Uncorrected refractive error is now recognized by the World Health Organization as a leading form of preventable blindness. 90% of uncorrected refractive error occurs in developing countries. Funds raised by Optometry Giving Sight are directed to projects that ensure sustainable, lasting results in three ways:
- Eye care service delivery - exams, low-cost eye glasses and low-vision devices;
- Human Resources - training of optometrists, eye care personnel and their teachers;
- Infrastructure development – establishment and support of vision centers, eye clinics and schools of optometry.
All funds raised by Optometry Giving Sight are currently allocated to support its Priority Projects in South Africa, East Africa, Sri Lanka and East Timor. It is anticipated that applications for funding for other projects will be invited in 2009.
