Brien Holden Vision Institute and Optometry Giving Sight
Why are Brien Holden Vision Institute Foundation and Optometry Giving Sight merging?
There has always been a close working relationship between our 2 organizations and we share the same mission, vision and values. The merger will allow us to use our resources more effectively and to achieve more significant and sustained outcomes to benefit the millions of people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired simply because they can’t access an eye exam and glasses from a qualified optometrist.
What is the difference between the Brien Holden Vision Institute and the Brien Holden Vision Institute Foundation?
The Brien Holden Vision Institute develops and implements global solutions for vision care and blindness prevention through science and technology, research and development, education and public health. These improve the quality of people’s lives, helping to reduce disability and poverty. The Foundation is the public health division of the Institute. Its mission is to create and deliver effective and innovative solutions for vision care and blindness prevention for all people. The Institute and Foundation are separate legal entities which collaborate in support of shared values and a commitment to vision for everyone, everywhere.
What happens next?
From March 1, 2018, Brien Holden Vision Institute Foundation and Optometry Giving Sight in Australia will become one charity. Over the coming months we will follow a similar process in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Ireland, UK/Europe and Singapore. There will be a transitional period while the merged charity takes shape and some changes are likely. During this time, our fundraising, community education and advocacy and project support will be unaffected. We will continue to update you and we will be in contact with those with whom we work closely.
What will the leadership of the merged charity look like?
Professor Kovin Naidoo is the CEO of the Brien Holden Vision Institute and this includes responsibility for the Foundation.
Clive Miller finished up as CEO of Optometry Giving Sight in December, 2017. All other Optometry Giving Sight staff will remain working in the merged organization.
The Directors of the Global Board of Optometry Giving Sight will continue to provide advice and support as part of a newly established Global Advisory Board, to be chaired by Dr. Juan Carlos Aragon. Dr Aragon will also join the Board of the Foundation.

How does this affect the day to day operations of Optometry Giving Sight?
These should remain largely unchanged. Over time, you may notice some changes as we adapt to the new operating environment and develop new and exciting strategies to ensure we achieve our strategic objectives.
How does this affect the projects that my donations are helping to fund?
There is no immediate change and the Foundation will continue to honor all current project partnerships and agreements. We will update you over the coming weeks regarding the outcomes that have been achieved thanks to your support in 2017; and our project priorities for 2018.
I am a regular monthly or annual donor to Optometry Giving Sight. What do I need to do?
Plans are already well advanced for Optometry Giving Sight to update its donor database capability by migrating to a new platform called The Raiser’s Edge. We have written to each of our regular donors under separate cover to advise them of these changes. We will keep our regular donors updated on future changes, such as when the reference on your bank statement will change to the new name.
My practice remits funds collected from patients via our Donation Box. What do I need to do?
There is no change if you remit these funds through our donation portal. If you pay these donations directly into our bank account, we will advise you when the bank account details are updated.
My company or organization is a sponsor of Optometry Giving Sight. What do I need to do?
