Welcome from the CEO
Thanks for taking the time to visit the Optometry Giving Sight website.
Here you will find information about who we are, what we do and how your donations are working to transform the lives of millions of people in desperate need of vision care.
From our eight fundraising offices around the world, to the projects in 39 countries that are supported by Optometry Giving Sight donors and sponsors, we are very passionate about the work we do.
Sight is the most treasured of our five senses. We see the world and its myriad of colours and shapes through the windows of our eyes. We learn with them. We laugh with them. We communicate with them. We provide for our families with them. We see our loved ones with them.
Sight can make the difference between a life of poverty and a life of opportunity.
By becoming an Optometry Giving Sight donor, you will be helping to transform lives through the gift of vision.
I encourage you to read our latest news for information about project updates, news from our sponsors and partners, and fundraising efforts from around the world. Make sure you join us on Facebook and Twitter as well!

Optometry Giving Sight is the only global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses. More than 600 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to the eye examination and glasses they need. Your donations allow Optometry Giving Sight to fund the solution by supporting programs that:
- Train – local eye care professionals and;
- Establish – vision centres for sustainability to;
- Deliver – eye care and low cost glasses.
In 2003, the Brien Holden Vision Institute Foundation, International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the World Council of Optometry created Optometry Giving Sight to mobilize resources from the global optometric community to help eliminate refractive error blindness and low vision.
Optometry Giving Sight was first launched in the UK in 2003, followed by Australia in 2004, the United States and Canada in 2005, and Italy in 2006. In 2009, Optometry Giving Sight launched in Norway, Singapore and Ireland; and in Mexico in 2014.
Optometry Giving Sight supports the goals of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan, which aims to reduce avoidable blindness and vision impairment by 25% by the year 2019.
All people who value good vision are invited to support Optometry Giving Sight by making a donation and / or by raising funds in their practices and work places.
A world where avoidable blindness and vision loss due simply to the lack of a pair of eye glasses no longer threaten the quality-of-life and future livelihood of children and adults because there is universal access to quality vision and eye care services for all those in need.
Optometry Giving Sight has established not for profit corporations and been awarded charitable status in Australia, Canada, USA, Italy, UK, Ireland and Mexico. These organizations are collectively referred to as the Optometry Giving Sight Global Organizations. Each Optometry Giving Sight Global Organization has agreed to adopt common procedures and policies in respect to corporate governance, fundraising, reporting, project funding and support.
Optometry Giving Sight in Norway is an unincorporated entity but has also agreed to be bound by these common procedures and policies. Optometry Giving Sight in Singapore is registered as a not for profit organization. In the UK, Optometry Giving Sight works in partnership with Vision Aid Overseas.

Below are just some of the agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) that are doing work in refractive error programs in countries most in need.
